Handmade fishing hook ‘Kamuro hook’ is succeeded as tradition in Okikamuro island.

Handmade fishing hook in Okikamuro. It’s called ‘Kamurobari’ (Kamuro hook).

‘Ippon turi’ (fishing by single line) fishing style had been transferred from Awado in Tokushima long time ago and this fishing style has been spread over Seto inland sea as one of main fishing style from Meiji thru Showa era.

During the feudal era, Agenosho was allowed to fish in privileged fish (sardine nets) under the direct control of the clan (Mitachiura), but Okikamuro in Haura (sub fishing village) was not allowed to fish using net. And as a result of embarking on single line fishing, it will develop to the extent that it surpasses Mitateura.

One of the things that supported it was the original fishing hook of the Okikamuro. This is a technique that was introduced from Tosa and Banshu in the Meiji era, and is said to be a combination of the two advantages. I would like to touch on the historical process around that.

Currently, the manufacturing industry that produce fishing hooks as a livelihood has disappeared, but commercially available fishing hooks "Kamuro hook" are sold by various manufacturers. This is a registered trademark of Yamaya, a person named Ryuichi Yanagihara in the Meiji era.

After the war, some fishermen, like my father, made their own handmade hooks. It seems that the opinions of the site were improved by incorporating them into the skills of full-time craftsmen. Ama type and Ise Ama type, which are famous for the type of fishing hook. The origin is unknown, but I would like to challenge the mystery.
